Linux/OSS : Abit KR7A-RAID/HPT372 IDE controllers
[Note: this page was originally written in April 2002, and is now largely defunct with respect to modern Linux distributions]
Have you got an Abit KR7A RAID board or another board with an HPT372 IDE controller? Having nightmares because Linux has a kernel panic on startup and you can't even get it installed? Don't worry!:
- Quick workaround: disable the RAID controller in your BIOS. This will let you get things up and running albeit without your second two IDE channels.
- Then recompile your kernel with a version >=2.4.19. (This is newly fixed in 2.4.19; for kernel 2.4.18 or below please use this very simple patch courtesy of Andy Jeffries)
This will let you boot OK, and use the additional IDE channels provided by the RAID controller. However, that's only as normal IDE channels, not as part of a RAID array. I'm afraid I don't know anything about using RAID functionality under Linux (although the above info will probably help in any case, as it simply means that the IDE controller is correctly detected). The manufacturer, HighPoint, do have some Linux drivers. but I haven't tried them.
